Yes, And (Or, Improv and Open Doors)

I am reading Chasing the Bright Side by Jess Ekstrom, and one of her tips for optimistic living is to adopt the improv technique of meeting offers with a “yes, and…” In other words, instead of saying no or maybe or but, say yes to what comes your way, and then figure out where to go with it. (Obviously, do not say yes to anything downright unsafe or distasteful). But, try to say yes to new experiences, new relationships, new places to go. As the author puts it, “Saying yes is like the national anthem of optimism.” It’s the only way, or at least the best way, to invite possibility into your life. Say yes, and figure out the details later.

What do you think of this idea?
