So remember how I once said I always wanted ballet lessons? And finally took lessons in my twenties? This winter my lifelong dream of voice lessons started to come true.
For literally years I wanted to find a voice teacher but I stalled because I didn’t know precisely what to be looking for in a teacher or what to expect in the lessons.
Then one of my coworkers’ sisters performed in the Rachel’s Place Production and I heard about the teacher she trained with in New York City. I didn’t want to use that teacher specifically as she is in super high demand and very expensive, but she has licensees trained in her methodology and I decided to work with one of them.
I’ll admit after the first lesson I felt really overwhelmed (and humbled) by how much I didn’t know, not to mention kind of foolish (lip trills, anyone?). I even considered canceling my next lesson and just forgetting about the whole business, but decided to give it one more shot. I’m so glad I did because something clicked for me in middle of the second session.
Suddenly I felt that I was grasping what she was telling me to do, and it all became a lot of fun. As I stood in the room, looking over my teacher’s shoulder at the dusk settling over Manhattan and singing my heart out, I was so filled with joy and so grateful to be alive. And so grateful for this opportunity to go after another dream.
