Every year before Rosh Hashanah, it helps me to remind myself that it’s about crowning Hashem King, not about shopping for my desires in the coming year. Crowning Him means that I understand He is King of the world, in a grand sense, but also King over me, in a personal sense, my outer and inner worlds and all the events of my life. And not only is He King of the beauty and majesty and miracles of life, He is King of the darkness and discomfort and pain.
So, as I reflect upon the past year and prepare myself for the Coronation, I remember —
the same Hashem Who is King of newborn nieces, sunshine, loyal friends, transatlantic flights, good hair days, soothing mentors, bursts of clarity, like-it-was-made-for-me gowns, good dates, sensitive shadchanim, coworker-sponsored birthday parties, and miracle recoveries,
is also King of stormy nights, rude emails, bad hair days, sudden diagnoses, confusion, awkward encounters, stubbed toes, very bad dates, grief, stolen credit cards, and broken hearts.
He is the One constant. He loves us and remembers everything. We can go into 5780 with complete trust, knowing that everything is in His Hands and He will make sure everyone gets exactly what is right for them exactly when they need it.
Wishing you all an uplifting, joyous, beautiful Rosh Hashanah and a sweet new year!
P.S. Just a reminder for those who don’t like honey – I dip my apple in maple syrup 🙂 (my challah, too, through the whole Y”T season).
