Muster Your Wits

One of my very favorite books is Emily of Deep Valley by Maud Hart Lovelace, set in 1912 Minnesota. Emily has just graduated from high school, and unlike all her college-bound friends, she is staying home to care for her grandfather who raised her. As fall turns to winter, Emily is depressed and lonely. She feels stuck, watching everyone else move on. Then one day Emily hears a quote from Shakespeare:

“Muster your wits: stand in your own defense.” And she resolves to muster her wits.

Emily buys a new dress. She forms a literary club. She makes new friends. She takes dancing lessons.

There was a dancing school in town but the classes were only for children. At first thought she felt foolish for going for private lessons, but she laughed herself down.

“Pooh! It’s nobody’s business but my own.”

It is so incredibly satisfying, not to mention inspiring. (No spoilers, but things work out well for Emily). As the new year approaches, in what ways would you like to muster your wits and stand in your own defense?

Have a great Shabbos!

P.S. I really, really appreciate feedback!
