How To Enjoy Restaurants With Friends

My slightly-controversial list of rules for an enjoyable restaurant experience:

  1. Review the menu before you go and choose three options in order of preference. The restaurant will be out of something(s) and if you don’t prepare, you will freeze up when the server asks you for your order.
  2. Assume everything costs 20% more than the prices listed on the website, which is surely out of date.
  3. It is completely fine to order the same dish as someone else at the table.
  4. You win or you learn.
  5. Agree not to order dishes to share with the table. This way you get to order what you want according to your tastes and budget, and enjoy your meal without worrying that you are eating someone else’s portion, or whether you will actually have to toss that last piece of ravioli sitting in a puddle of congealing cream sauce because no one wants to be the one to finish the dish.
  6. Ask for separate checks.
