Dr. Barbara Frederickson studies the science of positive emotions. As we know, experiencing positive emotions is one aspect of flourishing and wellbeing. She identifies the “big ten” positive emotions: love, gratitude, inspiration, joy, serenity, interest, pride, hope, amusement, and awe.
Recently, I gave my journaling group a prompt:
Think of a memory associated with one of the above emotions. Call it to your mind and write a Captured Moment of this memory — a detailed, sensory description of the memory, as if you are experiencing it in the present tense.
This activates the skill of savoring, which helps us develop a sense of wellbeing and builds resilience.
You can even fill a notebook with these positive memories. It can be your Patronus ;-).
I love this idea! And I love how you call it a patronus. Really brings out the idea of feeling happy and safe and protected. I hate writing but think I’m going to try this.
I hope you enjoy it!
