I learned this idea in a recent training and thought it was helpful to think about. When confronted with a stressful situation, there are two categories of coping strategies, both of which can be helpful:
- emotion-focused coping, which addresses the stress and difficult emotions evoked by the situation (i.e. sleep, self-care, journaling, a good cry, therapy, etc.)
- problem-focused coping, which addresses the problem itself (i.e. establishing boundaries, enlisting helpers, identifying solutions)
Hopefully a nugget that can make things a little easier if needed.
I love the graphic. So meaningful in context.
