The Upside of Uncertainty

Awhile ago I read of the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle, which I do not understand, but from what I gather refers to our inability to know for certain both the speed and position of a quantum particle (the smallest building block of matter). In other words, there is a limit to how much we can possibly know about the world around us (or inside us). Built into nature is an element of mystery.

Physicist Werner Heisenberg also said, “The first gulp from the glass of natural sciences will turn you into an atheist, but at the bottom of the glass, God is waiting for you.”

I find it comforting to know that even physics isn’t completely knowable. Nature camouflages G-d. Of course, sometimes Hashem steps out of hiding and breaks the rules that we do accept as reality, like at the Yam Suf. But in the absence of open revelation, the knowledge that nothing is a foregone conclusion helps me hold onto hope.

P.S. Lyrics I can’t resist sharing (from the finale of The Prince of Egypt, this is not everyone’s cup of tea, or Kedem grape juice, but it gives me the chills…):

Many nights we prayed, with no proof anyone could hear

All at once an answer came in ways we never planned

So we are not afraid, for we’ve seen miracles appear

Is there one more miracle?

Is there one more miracle if I stretch forth my hand…?
