Hey, all. I was going to post something before Shavuos but I didn’t get to it and now…what a year this week has been (not my own line).
I haven’t ever posted about politics and won’t start now but I will acknowledge current events because how can I not? Just want to say that I think murdering and also rioting and looting are utterly inexcusable. Hopefully we agree on these and you still feel welcome here. Had to put that out there.
I hope you had a nice Shavuos, whoever you spent it with and wherever you’re holding with social distancing. I had a nice one b”H 🙂 . Yes, I did read the Family First article about “waiting for Mr. Perfect” vs. “settling” (and think it’s ridiculous to present these options as a binary, either-or choice as if that’s how any of this works). I was pleasantly surprised at how healthy and balanced the article was for the most part (i.e. “I was single for awhile and then I met a guy I really liked and I married him”). I think that was largely because the author deferred to each of the women to tell her story without editorializing them and I’d like to see more of that in future coverage of shidduchim. Additionally, Dr. Ruchama Fund really validated my own feelings on the subject:
Looking from the outside in, it’s easy to judge older singles. Outsiders, thinking they have fresh insight to assess ongoing situations, assign pat reasons as to why an older single hasn’t found The One. This causes singles intense pain.
“Singles are often accused of making foolish decisions, of not knowing what they’re doing,” says Dr. Ruchama Fund, a psychologist in Brooklyn who offers coaching for effective dating. People say, “She should’ve settled,” but they don’t understand what’s going on behind the scenes.”
What did you think of this article?
Recently I’ve been cooking a lot from Table for Two: A Kallah’s Cookbook, by Rivka Parizad, and it’s really fun. My friend bought it for me as a gift before her wedding, isn’t that the sweetest? I’ve made the babaganoush, matbucha, sweet potato kugel, baked ziti, and honey-mustard chicken stir-fry and everything was delicious. Can’t wait to keep trying new recipes.
Have you tried anything new over this lockdown?
